Modeling a room using Maya

Hi all,

here some basic object modeling tutorial using Maya. sorry for the limited pic available. In this tutorial, we will create a room with a window, door and included the door handle.

Open your Maya program. You will get basically a interface as below.

To create a model, change and make sure you have the Polygons preferred selected.

Each deference preferred settings will have a deference functions and tools sets.

To start our room model, we will need to create the ground first.

Go to Create --> Polygon Primitives --> Plane

Click once on your perspective area as below to insert the plane shape.

Noticed that the plain shape already inserted.

Press F key to get the plane shape fit on screen.

You might have a basic plain shape like above.

Click and change the plane shape scale and segment on the right side of the screen. Width 200. Height 200. Subdivision Width 10. Subdivision High 10.

Now your plain will be expend as above. Rename the shape as ground.

For the next task, change the shading view setting. Shading à Wireframe on Shaded.

Then, select the cube polygon icon to add new polygon cube.

The cube will be our room. Change the measurement as above. Width 100, Height 80, Depth 100. Rename the shape as room.

Press Spacebar to change the camera view in to 4 screen as below.

Arrange the room to center.

Now, we will ‘cut’ our cube to create the door and window hole.

Select the room cube. Go to Edit Mesh --> Insert Edge Loop Tool.

Click at the edge line of the cube as above to ‘cut’ the cube.

You must have your cube ‘cut’ as above.

Next, select the face components and select or click on the surface of the room cube that will be our door.

Once the face selected, press delete key.

Your room cube will look as above. Repeat the same steps and apply it to create a window area as below. The window will be at the back side of the room.

Once you have 2 hole area for door and window, you are ready to extrude the cutting edge.

Extrude can be consider as giving the thickness level either to increase it or decree it.

Select the line components.

Click and select the left and right line for the door hole as below. Press Shift to select multiple lines.

The line selected will be in orange color.

Then, go to Edit Mesh --> Extrude

Navigation arrows will be show. Choose the correct arrow and click it, move it inside the room to create the extrude to the wall. Refer below.

Now your left and right door panel will be thick as above.

By pressing the Alt + LMB to freely moving the models, Alt + CMB to drag the screen, and Alt + RMB to zoom in or zoom out, adjust your view angle as below.

The objective is to get the best view for top line as we will extrude that area.

Once select the line, extrude the line as below. Align it as thick as the side extruded lines.

Now that you know how to extrude, repeat the steps and apply it on the window edge as below.

Next, add new cube shape and name it as door.

Scale and align it to fit the door hole that we already created. You might need to used the front, side and top view as well to get it fit.

Press Spacebar to change the screen view.

Once you get it done. We will start modifying the door and get it in to better shape.

To do this, we will isolate the door from the ground and room model.

Press Shift + i to get the door isolated as below.

By using the Insert Edge Loop Tool that we learned before, slice the door as below. The idea is to create the ‘small window’ area on the door.

Once you already create the window area. Select the face component and select the surface that will be the window on the door.

Extrude it inside as below. Do this on the other side of the door as well.

Now, we will add another shape as the door handle.

Insert the cylinder shape and name it as door_handle.

Select the door_handle shape, rotate and move to arrange the door handle as below.

Your door handle should be positioning as above.

Next, we will group the door and door_handle shapes as one.

Go to the Window --> Outliner.

A popup panel will be showed. Select the door and door_handle shapes. Press Shift to select a multiple shapes.

Once the two shapes were selected, press Ctr + G to group it. You will get a group as above.

Once the door and door_handle was grouped, we will now adjust the pivot point.

Pivot point is a point where the rotation will be set as the center.

Select the group as above.

By pressing H, move the pivot pint to the edge as above.

Test your door movement. It should be working as a door should be as above.

Next, we will model the back window. Insert new cube shape and adjust it as below.

You might need to used the top, front and side view for positioning and scale the window fit in to the window hole created on the room.

Once your back window is done, its time to save the works.

1st, create a folder where all the projects and files will be stored.

In 3D modeling and animation, proper and systematic document storage is importance. We don’t want any of the file corrupted when opened or any missing files problems.

Once the folder was created, in Maya, go to File --> Project --> New..

A popup window will be showed as below. Name the project as Office Room and then browse for the folder that we already created before. Then click the Accept button.

Now we already save our project. Next we need to save the scene. A project might contain more then 1 scene.

Go to File --> Save Scene As..

A popup box will be appearing. Name the file as module1. Just ensure that the location is correct as for project Office Room.
